3 Stocks Under $10 Making Big Moves on Big Volume

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- A smart trader keeps a close eye on unusual upside volume in stocks -- and unusual volume in a stock that trades below $10 should really make you sit up and pay attention.

>>5 Stocks Set to Soar on Bullish Earnings

Stocks that trade below $10 a share can make big moves to the upside very quickly, and short-term traders can try to capture some of that massive volatility. Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits.

If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

>>5 Rocket Stocks to Buy for Big Gains

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making sharp moves higher with unusual upside volume flows.

BlackBerry

BlackBerry (BBRY) engages in the design, manufacture and marketing of wireless solutions worldwide. This stock is trading up 5% to $9.44 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $9.24-$9.65

52-Week Range: $5.44-$16.82

Tuesday's Volume: 19.28 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 25.13 million

From a technical perspective, BBRY is jumping higher here with decent upside volume flows. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $8.92 to $8.95. Following that bottom, shares of BBRY have started to spike higher and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if BBRY manages to take out its 200-day moving average of $9.72 to some more near-term overhead resistance at $10.10 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BBRY as long as it's trending above those double bottom support zones at $8.95 to $8.92 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 25.13 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then BBRY will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $10.85 to $11.65, or even $12.18.

Andatee China Marine Fuel Services

Andatee China Marine Fuel Services (AMCF), through its subsidiaries, engages in the production, storage, distribution and trading of blended marine fuel oil for cargo and fishing vessels in the People's Republic of China. This stock is trading up 8% to $1.89 a share in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $1.75-$1.93

52-Week Range: $0.48-$2.75

Tuesday's Volume: 193,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 192,169

From a technical perspective, AMCF is soaring higher here right above its 50-day moving average of $1.63 with above-average volume. This move has started to push shares of AMCF into breakout territory, since the stock has flirted with some near-term overhead resistance at $1.89. Shares of AMCF are now starting to trend within range of triggering an even bigger breakout trade. That trade will hit if AMCF manages to take out some more near-term overhead resistance at $2.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AMCF as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.63 and then once it sustains a move or close above $2.20 with volume that hits near or above 192,169 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then AMCF will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 52-week high of $2.75.

Kopin

Kopin (KOPN) develops display products and computer headset technology. This stock is trading up 5% to $4.18 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $3.95-$4.29

52-Week Range: $3.06-$4.62

Thursday's Volume: 228,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 140,627

From a technical perspective, KOPN is ripping higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $4 with above-average volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $3.51 to its intraday high of $4.29. During that move, shares of KOPN have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move is quickly pushing shares of KOPN within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if KOPN manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.52 to its 52-week high at $4.62 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in KOPN as long as it's trending above Tuesday's low of $3.95 or above its 200-day at $3.74 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 140,627 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then KOPN will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $5.50 to $6.

Best Paper Companies To Watch For 2014: Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund(CFP)

Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund is a closed-ended equity fund of fund launched and managed by Cornerstone Advisors, Inc. The fund invests funds investing in the public equity markets of the United States. It invests in stocks of companies operating across diversified sectors. Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund was formed on April 26, 2007 and is domiciled in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

    Basis for a 9 Series
Developing an all-new vehicle is very expensive, and automotive companies try to reduce these costs wherever possible. Volkswagen Group AG (NASDAQOTH: VLKAY  ) has even gone as far as to create plans to build 40 vehicle models off one platform. Considering Volkswagen produces numerous varieties of small vehicles, both under the Volkswagen name and the names of other companies owned by Volkswagen Group, using a single platform should mean big savings on development costs.

Hot Healthcare Technology Stocks To Invest In 2014: AvalonBay Communities Inc. (AVB)

AvalonBay Communities, Inc. engages in the development, redevelopment, acquisition, ownership, and operation of multifamily communities in the United States. As of January 31, 2009, the company owned or held a direct or indirect ownership interest in 164 operating apartment communities comprising 45,728 apartment homes in 10 states and the District of Columbia. It also held a direct or indirect ownership interest in 14 communities under construction, as well as held rights to develop an additional 27 communities. The company was founded in 1978 and is based in Arlington, Virginia.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    Construction delay
Finally, on Thursday residential real estate investment trust AvalonBay Communities (NYSE: AVB  ) reported that its AVA Theater District project in Boston had suffered a partial collapse during construction. The community had been scheduled to open for occupancy in the third-quarter of 2015, but will likely be pushed out one or two quarters, according to analysts at Wells Fargo. While this isn't good news, like the aforementioned MasterCard and Ford stories it's not devastating, either. AvalonBay ended the year with 81,522 apartment homes across 12 states and the District of Columbia, meaning it has plenty of avenues to boost occupancy and rent rates in the meantime. With lending rates potentially set to rise sooner rather than later, residential REITs such as Avalon look to be in great shape.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Today, I plan to introduce the final selection to the Basic Needs Portfolio: AvalonBay Communities (NYSE: AVB  ) .

Today's best performer was ratings agency Moody's (NYSE: MCO  ) , which surged 8.3% after it and McGraw-Hill (NYSE: MHFI  ) subsidiary Standard & Poor's settled a lawsuit with slightly more than a dozen plantiffs in a case involving their rating of financial securities relating to the financial crisis. Although no financial figures were disclosed, settlements in cases like this are extremely common and usually for less than the sought-after amount, since court fees can be quite expensive. This could also bode well for future and ongoing litigation such as the U.S. government's suit against McGraw-Hill's Standard & Poor's for its selected ratings during the financial crisis.

  • [By Jeremy Bowman]

What: Shares of Moody's (NYSE: MCO  ) were getting a ratings boost from investors today, climbing as much as 11% after reaching a settlement over two mortgage bond lawsuits that gave the ratings industry an across-the-board boost. Standard & Poor's parent McGraw-Hill (NYSE: MHFI  ) was also up as much as 6% today.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

Less diversity, higher risk, dubious ratings
The Wall Street Journalnotes that these type of investments have seen a lot less action since the financial crisis, since the reliance on only one loan is considered quite risky. But low interest rates have increased investor appetite for yield and, therefore, risk. Also a factor is that ratings agencies like (NYSE: MHFI  ) Standard & Poor's are often giving these products very high investment ratings, as well, fueling speculation that this entity in particular is easing standards in order to get a slice of the pie.

Cramer's 'Mad Money' Recap: Life Lessons

Search Jim Cramer's "Mad Money" trading recommendations using our exclusive "Mad Money" Stock Screener.

This program aired on Aug. 8.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- "There are some things I've been keeping from you," Jim Cramer told "Mad Money" viewers.

So he went a little autobiographical to tell viewers how he came to make the markets his life and where he learned his most valuable lessons about money and investing. Cramer said that unlike most people who became interested in the stock market, his love of stocks didn't start in college or even in high school. He said it was fourth grade when he first noticed how his father's mood would change based on whether his stocks were going up or down that day. That piqued his interest, he said. That started an investment education from dad that has stuck with him ever since. Cramer recalled how his father brought home the 1964 board game "Stocks & Bonds," manufactured by, of all companies, 3M (MMM), which drew him into the markets even further. It turned out stocks are a lot like his obsession with baseball since you're always on the lookout for which players are hot and which ones are not. What's the lesson from Cramer's elementary school days? Get your kids involved with money early in life and they may just play for life, which is a good thing since the stock market is a long-term game. It Pays to Save Cramer's next life lesson stemmed from his high school and college days and the first jobs that followed. He said the lesson is to always be saving, no matter how hard things are at the time. It was selling ice cream at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia that taught Cramer his first lessons in business, he said, including how much money there was to be made by obtaining exclusive rights to sell something cold on hot afternoons in the upper decks. But it was Cramer's father who again helped him open an account at Fidelity to invest in mutual funds. Cramer said he put money away every week. That dedication to investing carried on after college, Cramer noted, even when his first job as a reporter was only paying him $156 a month. As he graduated into more lucrative jobs, ones that paid $179 a week, he continued the savings.

But Cramer's most challenging point was while in San Diego, after his apartment was robbed and he lost everything. He spent six months living out of his car while he rebuilt his life, but continued to put money away -- enough so that 35 years later those mutual funds total well into the six figures. Start Small

Cramer's next life lesson: Start small and do your homework. He recounted how he started his career as a stock picker in 1979, making his first trade in an orange grower in Florida. He bought 10 shares for a total of $9, he recalled. A week later, an early frost wiped out the orange crop and he lost 50% of his investment.

Not to be discouraged, Cramer said his next trade was in Bob Evans Farms (BOBE) after eating at one of its restaurants and doing a lot of homework on the company's outlook. That trade proved to be successful as the company had a good quarter and shares split shortly thereafter.

Cramer's lesson learned: Know what you own and why you own it. He didn't know anything about oranges, he admitted, but a good breakfast made sense to him. Cramer recalled an investment he made shortly thereafter in SPS Technologies, a company that made airplane fasteners, now part of Precision Castparts (PCP). He said a buddy had worked there and told him the company was hiring like mad. Cramer again did the homework and deduced that SPS was a win, especially with no news yet to be filed on the hiring binge. Combine what you know with what you can find out, he concluded. It's All in the Trade Cramer's next lesson was all about trading, something that has become more difficult over the years, he said, but that's also been helped along by low commission rates, readily available information and lightning fast trading. Cramer said that while in college he taught himself discipline by committing to coming up with one trading idea per week. That idea, he said, eventually made it into his "Mr. Bullish" newsletter, which he mailed to his parents every week. Eventually he put the tips onto his voicemail message as a sign of his commitment to his ideas.

That conviction, he said, enticed a friend to give him $500,000 to invest. Cramer said he promptly lost $70,000 of that money while learning another tough lesson: You can never invest big sums of money all at once. Stick with the companies you know and know why you like them, he said. With conviction and discipline that big sum will slowly start to grow. Remember Humility

He also learned lessons while trading at Goldman Sachs (GS). Cramer said he learned how to build a portfolio from the ground up, how to properly manage capital for the long term and the value of diversification. He learned how to explain investments in plain English, and about humility when things don't go your way.

Cramer reminded viewers that individuals can, and do, beat the markets regularly. But that's only accomplished by having solid ideas on which to build.

Trades shouldn't be turned into investments if things go south, nor should investments become trades if you rack up quick gains. Only by knowing why you own a stock will you know when it's time to sell, cut your losses or let your gains ride. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

Advisors' Opinion:

At the time, NDS Group was 80% owned by News Corp (NWSA) and they were providing the smart cards for all Direct TV (DTV) receivers. Further, they were one of only three smart card providers and one of their competitors, Canal Plus a Vivendi subsidiary, was struggling with maintaining the security of their smart card systems which they were providing to non-News Corp television companies throughout Europe. It seems that the access codes on their systems were turning up on the internet and bootleggers were stealing the signals. EcoStar, which would later be spun off by DISH, was making the same claims back in the 1990s. Both companies maintained that News Corp, acting through its subsidiary NDS Group, was the culprit. To make a long story short, Canal Plus filed a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against News Corp and later on EcoStar would follow suit.

Gannett (GCI) operates as a media and marketing solutions company in the U.S. and internationally. This stock closed up 5% at $29.08 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 4.65 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 2.28 million

    Volume % Change: 125%

From a technical perspective, GCI ripped sharply higher here above-average volume. This spike higher on Monday is quickly pushing shares of GCI within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GCI manages to take out its 200-day moving average of $29.37 to some more resistance at $29.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GCI as long as it's trending above Monday's intraday low of $27.85 or above $27 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 2.28 million shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then GCI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 50-day moving average of $31.47 to $32.90. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give GCI a chance to tag $34.

Broadcaster CBS (NYSE: CBS) was in 9th place at 80.9 million unique visitors in November. Comcast NBCUniversal was 14th place with 64.4 million. Gannett (NASDAQ: GCI) sites were 16th at 57 million. What happens if the federal government kills the proposed combination of Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) and Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA)? Nothing. Cable service will remain poor. Advisors' Opinion:

With no alternative candidates, there's no guarantee that directors will leave even if they fail to receive majority support. Consider the case of Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) . In 2010 and 2012, directors Thomas V. Reifenheiser, John R. Ryan, and Vincent S. Tese remained on the board even though they all failed to receive majority support in the company's 2010 and 2012 elections. Worse, Cablevision renominated the shunned directors yet again in 2013.

The mobile gaming market is a hit-or-miss industry and this volatility has taken its toll on many game-developing companies over the past few years. Companies like Zynga (ZNGA) and Glu Mobile (GLUU) have fallen prey to this uncertainty due to their inability to consistently create attractive games. Consequently, stocks of both companies have consistently tumbled since they went public.

  • [By FinanceGuru]

Glu Mobile (GLUU) is now reaping the success of the moves that it made in its past product cycle to monetize its games in a better and more efficient manner. Its strategy of focusing on leveraging platform strength and creating long-term gaming franchises has proved profitable. The launch of new games such as Robocop, Defenders & Dragons, and Motocross Meltdown have been key catalysts for Glu Mobile. Also, the launch of Deer Hunter on Facebook (FB) is also driving adoption across a higher number of users.

Truth be told, with just a quick glance, Glu Mobile Inc. (NASDAQ:GLUU) doesn't look all that compelling. Oh sure - the stock's up from a low of $2.10 in late June to $2.83 right now, but that's not an unusual move for GLUU. We've seen them before, with most of them petering out rather quickly. When you take a step back and really take a good luck at the bigger picture though, you might agree that now would be a great time to quietly step into a Glu Mobile position.
