Best Railroad Stocks To Invest In 2014

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over daily movements, we do like to keep an eye on market changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

Stocks hit another record high on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and the narrower, price-weighted Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining 0.48% and 0.35%, respectively. Both indexes are sitting at all-time highs.

Institutional money managers must report their stock positions to the SEC within 45 days of the end of each calendar quarter, and Warren Buffett's bricks-to-railroad conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B), follows the same rule. The most noteworthy change Buffett made to Berkshire's portfolio is the addition of a sizable new position 40.1 million shares valued at $3.4 billion -- in energy super-major Exxon Mobil (XOM) . In fact, Buffett constituted roughly three-quarters of the position in the second quarter and obtained confidential treatment from the SEC in his previous filing as he continued to build the position.

But IBM has had to deal with increasing competition to its business model. Business software giant Oracle (NYSE: ORCL  ) has finally reached an impressive execution milestone in the strategy it began four years ago with its acquisition of Sun Microsystems: Oracle's new chips and server products managed to best Big Blue's offerings in independent benchmark testing. Smaller companies will increasingly find their own niche roles in the big-data space as well. For instance, CyrusOne (NASDAQ: CONE  ) , which got spun off from Cincinnati Bell recently, is seeking to make a name for itself in the data-storage infrastructure space. Despite its hefty debt load, CyrusOne has huge growth potential to capitalize on the growing need for data-storage centers, and it has the benefits of tax-favored real-estate investment trust status to boot.

The most recent Affymax article states that Takeda withdrew from consideration for European approval "because they were doing the "root cause analysis" they would not be able to complete the investigation because it was still in process and "ongoing" despite the fact that severe reactions were not present at the time of the clinical trials." However, there is no evidence to support this conclusion. The truth is that we showed you an excerpt directly from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use that stated the CHMP "was of the provisional opinion that Omontys could not have been approved" due to "study results indicating that Omontys may increase the risk of death or heart and circulatory problems." It is clear that the EU application was withdrawn because Takeda (TKPHF.PK) could not get Omontys approved due to its safety profile.

As I pointed out about a year ago, SKUL stock would face some tough headwinds, such as:

Competition: It is intense, with operators like Beats by Dre, Incase, Urbanears, Soul, Sony (SNE), JVC, Bose and even Adidas (ADDYY). Fickleness: This is the bane of the fashion business. The Skullcandy brand isn’t too hip — that can change overnight, but success can be fleeting, too. Market Size: For the most part, Skullcandy has focused on the youth crowd, such as those who are snowboarders or skateboarders. The problem is that it’s a niche market, and one where the crowd rapidly moves on as it gets older.

These issues all remain for SKUL stock, as evidenced by the steep drop in the revenues in 2013.

Yet it's not really what Reebok parent Adidas (NASDAQOTH: ADDYY  ) was really looking for at the moment. Ever since the sneaker maker was acquired in 2006, it's served as a drag on Adidas' performance. It was looking for Reebok to finally turn to growth this year with new footwear and clothing-line introductions.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    What the Teck?
If you invest in commodity-based companies or miners, you've probably uttered the phrase "What the heck?" a few times over the past year. I know I have! However, I feel there are plenty of reasons to believe that Teck Resources (NYSE: TCK  ) , a miner of everything from copper and zinc to coal and silver, will turn things around.
