Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jeremy Bowman]
Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) shares finished up 2.1% after the insurance provider said earnings per share improved 15% from $2.02 a year ago to $2.33, soaring past the $2.02 analysts expected. Travelers' bottom line has benefited from price increases implemented over the last two years. Management has argued that an increase in natural disasters necessitates higher premiums. It also hiked its quarterly dividend from $0.46 to $0.50, giving it a 2.3% yield.

Only four of the 30 Dow components are in the red today, including Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) , which has slipped 0.5%. In a letter to shareholders, CEO Jay Fishman said the company had "no excuses" for weak performance and wouldn't be blaming natural disasters and low bond yields. He pointed to raising rates as one way to increase profits, which could be great for shareholders -- though it could push customers to competitors. For now, investors are focusing on the downside potential.
- [By Dan Dzombak]
On the other side of earnings, Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) is today's worst Dow stock, down 3.4% after reporting better-than-expected earnings but disappointing future pricing guidance. The company reported EPS of $2.41, far better than analyst expectations of $1.64 per share, while revenue of $6.39 billion was well ahead of analysts' expectations of $6 billion. Despite all the good news, in the conference call the company indicated that its increased prices, while contributing to the great results, were leading to a drop in volume. This suggests that Travelers' recent outperformance is unsustainable and the company will have to lower its prices to remain competitive.
- [By Dan Carroll]
Not all stocks are up today, despite the surge. Travelers (NYSE: TRV ) just can't find its footing. The stock has lost about 0.6% today, although Travelers has been as good a bet as any on the Dow over the past year: In that time, the stock has gained more than 47%. CEO Jay Fishman pointed out how falling bond yields have pressured the company's investments, pushing it to raise insurance coverage rates for some customers. It's not the end of the world for the company, but the sluggish economic rebound means that yields will likely remain depressed for some time. If another big disaster like last year's Hurricane Sandy comes around, Travelers could be in trouble.
